UNHCR spokesperson Katerina Kitidi said that at least seventy incidents of armed violence were documented during the first quarter of this year, which caused the death and injury of dozens of innocent civilians.

She stated that UNHCR's partners in the field of protection were able to monitor 40 documented injuries that occurred during the month of March only, of which 13 targeted temporary camps for the displaced in the governorate, the highest number in years.

The UN official indicated that the escalation of fighting caused the destruction of infrastructure and civilian property, as well as unofficial sites hosting the displaced and water tanks.

She added that livestock have been severely affected, and large numbers of livestock and sheep have been killed due to the bloody fighting and intense bombardment, which has deprived poor communities of their livelihoods.

The raging military battles since the beginning of this year have pushed nearly 2,300 families to flee in the Ma'rib Governorate, which is home to more than a quarter of the total of 4 million displaced Yemenis, according to the UN official's assurances.

The High Commissioner for Refugees called on the conflicting parties in Yemen to take the necessary measures to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure in the governorate from the repercussions of the raging fighting.

It also called for securing safe passages for civilians outside the conflict zones, respecting their choice to move towards safer areas, and providing protection for those who decide to remain in their areas, with the necessity of preserving the civilian character of the areas hosting the displaced to avoid turning them into potential military targets.
