Gov’t Spokesman: Houthis block Singaporean firm from checking Safer tanker الثلاثاء 11 أُغسطس 2020 12:20 ص الصحوة نت - خاص Alsahwa Net-The government’s spokesman, Rageh Badi, said on Monday that the Houthis militia blocked technical experts from a Singaporean firm contracted by the United Nations (UN) to check the Safer floating tanker in the Red Sea.

Anchored off the Ras Issa port, north Hodeida on the Red Sea, the Safer Super Oil tanker has been left with no repairing service for five years.

Its load of 1.

3 million barrels of oil could spill into the Red Sea water at any moment due to corrosion of the tanker.

The Houthis pledged mid last month to permit the UN to check the tanker.

Yet, this time the Houthis demand change of the company and that technical experts be changed as part of their defiance and procrastination, Badi said.

He indicated that the Houthis insist on blocking repairing of the tanker despite the risk of rupture and threats of a disaster in the Red Sea region.

He said that the Houthis refused in the last minutes granting visas to the experts of the Singaporean firm to enter the country and do the repairing check.

In a statement quoted by the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat daily Newspaper, Badi said that that the Houthis insist on their defiance and are not serious to avert the looming oil spill from the decaying tanker.

He went on saying “Until this moment, the Houthis lie, reverse their word and demand that experts be changed with others from other nationalities.

” He said that the condition of the tanker is worsening and a disaster looms amid chains of lies and defiance by the Houthis.

“The world must be aware that something worse than what happened at Beirut Port cloud take place at  at Ras Issa Port,” he said.

“The UN envoy must speak frankly about the party that hinders repairing of the tanker,” Badi said.
